The Corrupt National News Media: A ‘Collection of Liars’ Who Endanger the American Republic

I’m old enough to remember a time when, if a U.S. president had brokered multiple historic peace agreements in the Middle East and one between Kosovo and Serbia, it would have been headline news for a week. There was a time when the president who accomplished this would have been able to hold a press conference with the White House press corps and have semi-curious reporters actually ask questions about those deals. Those things would have happened even in a Republican administration, and that time was not so long ago.

But those times are gone, and will never return without fundamental change in the media establishment itself, and the manner in which our society holds media operations accountable for the serial mendacity we see committed each and every day by cable news outlets, major newspapers and fake news-oriented magazines like The Atlantic. The simple fact of the matter is that the current status quo in the U.S. news media is not only not consistent with the maintenance of a free and open society, it is actively and openly hostile to it.

Up until a few years ago, observers could be relatively sanguine about the state of the news media. The American press has always been biased. Indeed, throughout most of our country’s existence, newspapers and magazines – effectively the only means of obtaining news until the 1920s – had no issue with being openly-affiliated with and supportive of specific political parties. So, the fact that media outlets were biased was simply the maintenance of 200+ years of status quo.

Indeed, it was only during the post-World War II era, with the advent of television news operations and the growing prominence of radio, that national media outlets even bothered to put up a pretense of somehow being unbiased. Even that thin veil of pretense was mainly driven by the evolving federal “fairness doctrine” that was implemented by the Federal Communications Commission in 1949. That doctrine required TV and radio broadcasters to provide balanced coverage of elections and political issues. For many years, beginning with the Radio Act of 1927, the federal government also enforced “equal time” rules that required broadcasters to provide equal time to opposing views whenever they presented editorial content. All of that was eliminated in the 1980s to accommodate the growing development of 24-hour cable news operations, led by CNN.

For many years – this is really true, all you young people out there – CNN actually advertised itself as being “fair and balanced.” Also true is the fact that MSNBC assumed the same posture for the first decade of its existence before becoming aggressively and intentionally leftist as it transformed itself into a megaphone for Barack Obama’s 2009 presidential campaign. Fox News also claimed to be fair and balanced at its incarnation in the mid-1990s, but now only the increasingly CNN-ish Bret Baier continues to make that claim as he signs off from his nightly “Fox Report.”

Even during the days of the “fairness doctrine” and equal time laws, the major media outlets were liberally-biased. Let’s face it: This is always going to be the case, given the leftwards-tilt of most college professors, especially those who teach journalism.

But there is a crucial, qualitative difference between being biased and just being outright liars. Walter Cronkite was biased, but he wasn’t generally an outright liar. The same was true of TV news figures like David Brinkley, Roger Mudd, and even into the pre-George W. Bush years of Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings. The shift from being figures who just put their own slants on otherwise factually-accurate news reports to being outright liars began in earnest following 9/11, led of course by Dan Rather and his use of transparently faked military documents in an effort to smear Bush while he was running for re-election. Things have only gone downhill from there.

Today, America is right back where it was during the advent of “yellow journalism” that came about in the early days of the 20th century. We’re back to having media outlets who openly pledge their allegiance to political parties or figures. If you can find a truly “fair and balanced” news operation at the national level today you will have discovered the media version of the ancient Incan and Mayan “cities of gold.” Legend has it that some such operations may exist out there, but people die before actually discovering them.

Attorney General William Barr called it out correctly on Friday when, in unusually blunt remarks, he referred to the mainstream press corps as “a collection of liars.”

From a report at NewsMax:

In an interview with Townhall, Barr’s no-holds-barred tirade zeroed in on coverage of months of racial justice demonstrations, some of which he said turned violent because of “street fighting radicals.”

“They’re basically a collection of liars. Most of the mainstream media,” he told Townhall. “They’re a collection of liars and they know exactly what they’re doing. A perfect example of that were the riots.”

He added, “Right on the street it was clear as day what was going on, anyone observing it, reporters observing it, it could not have escaped their attention that this was orchestrated violence by a hardened group of street fighting radicals.

“And they kept on excluding from their coverage all the video of this and reporting otherwise and they were doing that for partisan reasons, and they were lying to the American people. It wasn’t until they were caught red-handed after essentially weeks of this lie that they even started feeling less timid.”

According to Barr, “the national mainstream media has dropped any pretense of professional objectivity and are political actors, highly partisan who try to shape what they’re reporting to achieve a political purpose and support a political narrative that has nothing to do with the truth.”

“They’re very mendacious about it,” he continued. “It’s very destructive to our republic; it’s very destructive to the Democratic system to have that, especially being so monolithic. It’s contributing to a lot of the intensity and partisanship.”

What the AG said is absolutely correct: Our mainstream media is indeed just a collection of professional liars, operatives in propaganda operations modeled after those of Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. As Barr points out, this model is “very destructive to our republic,” specifically because it promotes a level of abject ignorance among the vast majority of the population, which in turn leads directly to the scenes of violence and destruction and death we see taking place on the streets of Democrat-controlled cities every day.

If you read the history of the rise of Hitler and his Nazi hordes, you will see that America today is roughly where Germany stood in 1938. This summer’s riots, staged and funded by operatives of the Democrat Party, were basically our version of Kristallnacht, which took place in November of that year. As most Americans are today, the Nazi-controlled news media ensured that the public was kept safely ignorant and misinformed about the true nature of the death and destruction that happened on that fateful night.

There was no public outrage, no public backlash against the Nazi hordes for all of that, because the corrupt news media ensured the vast majority of the population knew nothing about it, and those who did know about it put the blame on the innocent victims.

That is the role the U.S. news media performs for the Democrat Party in America today, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

It is one thing for the Attorney General to call that out and speak the truth about the real state of our corrupt national media, but it is no more than a good start. If our society cannot devise some means of holding these depraved, anti-American media operations and their operatives accountable for their serial mendacity, then our Republic is well and truly doomed, and it could all happen far faster than we can even imagine.

That is all.

The enemedia complex is a CCP owned fifth column of true believer agitprop spinmeisters that would make Joseph Goebbels proud.

Robert Barnes has tried to diminish RICO liabilities, but it appears that it was intended for more than shakedowns and financial fraud and linking (for example) the person who ordered a hit with the one who carries it out. There may be antitrust variations or interpretations that could eventually snare the major news outlets, as they have deprived the entire American people of their Constitutional rights. Not just the media, but Fauci perhaps.

Depriving someone of their Constitutional rights is also being interpreted in one case where a young boy was attacked by two 21 year old women as “hate speech,” because they not only physically attacked him, they discriminated against his Constitutional rights to free speech. Depriving someone of their rights is going to be a battlefield issue, where Conservatives, Liberals and Libertarians are all on the same side. But not the ACLU and the others of the crazy Left, who have become criminally insane (they should be featured on Criminal Minds as unsubs.)

We’ll see a California church use this Constitutional question in the near future, and churches and synagogues in NYC as well.

Your lead-in graphic is missing NPR.

And never forget who pays the bills of all of these centralized “news” sources, global corporations, big Pharma, and the Chicoms. One big global world cesspool.

Which is why conservatives need to STOP funding the enemy… It takes a bit of work and a determination to either do without or find a conservative alternative, but its worth it.

Its a war, quit giving the emeny your monies.

Despite Trump’s best efforts and the reporting of people like Dave here, much of the American people at large remain woefully ignorant. Recent polling shows that something on the order of 86% of the public views the MSM (D) with contempt and clearly say they are biased towards the Democrats.

One would think therefore, that the MSM (D) would be irrelevant in swaying public opinion, but it is not. Why is that? Rush recently cited that even though 86% of the people hold the media in contempt, they still apparently like and believe THEIR preferred news source. This is just like the phenomenon of how congressional incumbents enjoy an overwhelming advantage over their challengers. Regardless of who controls congress, it consistently scores at or near the bottom in public surveys like Gallup and the RCP leader boards. A thinking person might logically ask, how can that be? The answer is simple and it is disheartening:

Many believe that the media and congress sucks, but not THEIR media outlet; and not THEIR congressperson or senator. So it is simple to see how individual media outlets and individual politicians survive their races in most cases.

Unless something seismic like Clinton’s nominal wife tries to ram through universal healthcare or ‘the One’ actually succeeds in ramming through Obamacare, or some other nationalized campaign focuses on switching congress, it remains largely the same. As I have previously written, the GOP doesn’t win elections, the Democrats lose them by being too radical for center-right America. The Dems won the house in 2018 by engaging with the media in a full court press that Trump and the GOP suck. Combine that with a huge number of incumbent RINO congressmen retiring because they couldn’t stand or support Trump and we get the congress of MaligNancy Klink and the radical squad. This was further facilitated (in both 2006 and 2018) by the active recruitment of moderate and independent sounding candidates to sell ignorant voters that the Dems offered something positive for the country.

Trump has proven to all but the most dyed-in-the-wool liberal leftists the stark contrast that the Democrats are nothing more than a monolithic group of anti-American leftists. The question is: will a majority Americans shed their pro incumbent fetish and schiff-can THEIR representative and senator, or blindly reelect these freedom destroying anarchy supporting Klink and Schemer sycophants?

Thankfully Trump is at the top of the ballot and hopefully the American people will not split their vote.

Another reason is the tremendous centralization of news media, from many diverse small local papers to a few enormous urban-based papers. Even the cities used to have several papers, and now most just have one.

Technology is another. Television profoundly changed journalism from a reflective thinking activity of reading to one of images and emotion. And now social media has taken this to the far extreme; most young people have the attention span of gnats as they stare into their phones throughout the day. It is very sad to wach.

phineas gage

You are absolutely right that bias has always been a part of reporting–yellow journalism has a long history in this country, and both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson despised the press.

The difference is that for most of our history it went both ways, and now it is monolithically one-way. You mention the journalism schools, which are a big part of it, but an even bigger reason is the control exerted over our educational system by the Left for the past fifty years or more.

The battle against the media–now including the social media giants–will be the key domestic conflict in this country over the next decade.

Yes, it was and is a two pronged offensive of the left.

Dumb down and propagandize the youth to hate America, destroy the concept and practice of critical thinking and buttress that with a 24/7 media America/conservative bash-fest and you achieve near total monolithic conformity.

There needs to be a constitutional amendment to control the “free press” and it must have defined penalties for fraud, libel, and lying, It must also mandate free speech for all viewpoints and ban all hidden and actual censorship. Laws and court actions alone will not cut it.

Note to parents and students: Defund and #walkaway from colleges and universities that ban, infringe upon, or outright deny free speech and thought through grade intimidation. Learn real marketable skills and become a productive asset to society and to yourselves. Vocational skills are the key to success for the vast majority. Unless you really have a clue as to a career path quit wasting four plus years of your life and scores of thousands of dollars pursuing worthless degrees in sociology and the like.

Do to institutions of higher learning what we are doing to Hollywood and sports.

I’m looking forward to a football free Sunday.

‘There needs to be a constitutional amendment to control the “free press” ‘

I think that would invalidate the First Amendment. It would not be wise to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

This is part of the culture wars, and we need to fight on that battlefield.

Where I think federal government action should be taken is against the social media giants using RICO statutes.

Well Phineas, I agree in general, but the constitution was written with the assumption that it would be the fundamental law of a 98+% law abiding public. Furthermore, no right is absolute (2A for example) and obviously there needs to be heightened penalties for libel and slander. Just because someone is a public figure should not make it open season to destroy him or her.

What I was really driving at was when organizations abridge the free speech rights of contrarians to the group thinkers and conservatives through coercion and outright intimidation, there needs to be severe penalties for such anti free speech PC censors.

phineas gage

Yes, but we already have libel laws on the books. If they are not enforced that is the fault of judges and politicians, who should then be voted out..

In general, the problem with the media requires free-market solutions, not government intevention or rewriting the Constitution.

The biggest problem this nation has is an increasingly ignorant and areligious population. To paraphrase Adams, this country and its government was designed for a civic minded religious people.

The people largely get the the government–and the media–that they deserve.

So you are saying that ‘gender studies’, liberal arts, environmental justice studies etc, are’t worth wasting, I mean, careful consideration, studying, while spending tens of thousands of dollars on???

phineas gage

There used to be great value to a liberal arts education, decades ago. Given the complete corruption of these academic disciplines, and the exponentially rising costs, simple market forces are going to drive many of these schools out of business over the next decade.

Paying a quarter of a million dollars or more for a worthless degree is no way to go through life, son.

phineas gage

‘Walter Cronkite was biased, but he wasn’t generally an outright liar.’

Not so–Uncle Walter straight up lied about the Tet offensive to turn opinion on the war. He was proud of it.

phineas gage

Poor reading on my part. Critique withdrawn.

“It is one thing for the Attorney General to call that out and speak the truth about the real state of our corrupt national media, but it is no more than a good start.”

So how can this be achieved??

imo, by every conservative speaking up in forums, blogs, articles, emails and letters to start demanding that conservative politicals get off their hineys and either start crafting laws to curb and hold responsible these media, so called journalists. If what they say isn’t true then perhaps when their brown shirts riots the messengers should be held to account for inciting.

When the top law enforcement officer won’t enforce the laws as written, that too, doesn’t help either. Bill can pine and whine and certainly doesn’t like the fact that the swamp no longer likes him. Probably because he took the job from Orange Man Bad which removed his favored status.

Liar Liar pants on fire. Here is a really good parallel to Dave’s insightful observations.
